Copying from Temp Internet Files- Avoid appending [1]

Submitted by Amtrak7 on August 15, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Whenever you copy any file from Temporary Internet Files, the file has [1] appended to its name in the destination folder. If I must use the files, or they are interdependent, I must rename them one by one.

Don't append [1].

Yes that's really annoying

Actually, you're not supposed to copy anything from this folder, as it's more a IE internal stuff, not yours. I understand your frustration, but voted down.

@ wasker:

That was really dumb. Seriously. Please don't talk anymore if you're going to say things like that.

It's very annoying.

Just curious: why do you need to copy items from the Temp Folder and how often do you need to do this?

wasker wrote on August 17, 2008, 10:29pm

@james: this is exactly the question which deserves such kind of treatment. If you're peeking into the browser cache (something which is managed internally by the browser), don't get surprised when you're not finding the stuff in a way you expect it to be. Temporary Internet Files is a cache, so it's up to IE how to store things there.

aakash wrote on August 18, 2008, 7:50am

@Amtrak7: If you right click on a file in the cache, you will notice that the cache name already has the number appended at the end in square brackets. Also, if you view this folder through the command prompt, you will notice that the files already have the square brackets. So basically, the files already have the appended numbers and hence appear when you copy them to the desktop.

This isn't official info, but my understanding is that number appending process is done to help distinguish files that are placed in the cache with the same file name.

However, I have to agree with wasker, you shouldn't be in this cache area.

What I find annoying about this, is when I open an attachment from say Hotmail via IE, edit it and try to save it in another spot...I have to rename the file then because of this [1] thingy....

Also a reason I'm using Opera at the moment ;)

@LIttleTijn: you can click Save rather then Open in the save dialog box in IE to save straight to your desktop or anywhere else rather than opening the document and then saving. This'll save you from renaming the file.
