Remember Desktop Icon Placement

Submitted by ryanlm on June 4, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

With remote desktoping being more and more popular, it is very annoying that when I log into my machine and the resolution is smaller and then eventually log back in normally and all of my icons are messed.

There are probably 10 programs out there that fix this, one of them is ultramon, just buy them or do it yourself!

Yes, this is definitely needed. In fact, Windows should automate this thing. Whenever you make changes to the position of icons on your desktop, it should automatically save it. Then, when Explorer crashes, it should try to restore the last memorized arrangement.

The easiest and best one I ever used [and still use today] is made by MS as a powertoy for windows 9x. it was a dll and reg called Layout.dll and Layout.reg. problem is that none of the ones I have tried work in x64 only x86. I never understood why this wasn't build into the os to begin with. For people with multi-monitors [like myself] this is a MUCH needed tool. If you have 2 or 3 dozen icons on your monitors and switch to say "Crossfire mode" or "SLI mode" all your icons switch to the center screen [its a horrible thing to see] and then you can either right click and restore icons or manually move each and every one back. its horrible

An easy way to reproduce this - create two accounts, Switch usera->userb->usera, and you'll find all your dekstop icons messed up. This might only work if you have a 30 inch display at high resolution, not sure.

I would also like to stop taking desktop screenshots on a regular basis just to be able to remember where my icons were placed. I get used to the placement, and a feature like this would only add ease to my life.

eirther way it should be easy for everyday users to do, not going in deep in to control pannel and possibility messing up the system cuz you dont know what your doing

I totally agree with TheQuestor, and that's the thing I use and install automatically on all the computers I work with or that I have to repair.

It is even worse on a Tablet PC and rotate display ... argh!!

This is really needed, and not only for the remote desktop scenario, but also for something so simple as switching to a lower resolution then switching back to your normal resolution. All your icons will be messed up. You don't lower the resolution, but, for example, when you install a new display driver, the resolution is lowered for a while in the process, and it's enough to leave your icons in a mess. It mesmerizes me that something like this isn't fixed yet since freakin' Windows 95! It seems Microsoft needs a common sense advisor somewhere high in its usability structure (I wouldn't mind applying... ;-)

this forced me to remove all desktop icons except for IE and Recycle bin, and actually use the Start Search and organize my stuff into folders.

Indeed, rubber gun... we with x64 systems are back to the days of windows 3.1, when you could not store anything on the desktop at all.

I agree with OneFingerSnap 100%. These sorts of basic Operating System features are the things that Microsoft SHOULD be doing (10 years ago with windows, by the way), instead of expanding the OS into non-OS areas.

I found a real simple solution to the problem of Remote Desktop rearranging desktop icons. Just follow the directions here: http://www.nthelp.com/50/save_desktop_layout.htm

Works great with Vista Ultimate
