Selection in columns too wide

Submitted by applejax on June 12, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Most notable when viewing an Explorer window in a smaller icon view that spans icons across multiple columns, there is no "dead space" in between columns when attempting to select a group of icons. This makes it extremely difficult to drag a selection rectangle around a group of icons in the middle of a list.

Highlight the icon and name only, not the whole column, upon selection.

I agree. But you are able to draw a new selection where no item is selected. You have to get used to it but it works well after some time.

Well this suggestion is against Fitt's law described in Microsoft's UI design guidelines (look for Fitt's Law in: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb545459.aspx ) and I prefer their solution.
