Volume Notification Icon Double Click

Submitted by StormChaser on June 3, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

When you right click the volume icon, "Open Volume Mixer" is bolded, indicating it as the default action for double click. When double clicked though, it acts the same as a single click.

When volume icon is double clicked, Volume Mixer should be opened.

That's really lame. I wonder if guys at MS never 2x clicked that icon. Or perhaps they never had the time to fill a bug with this. Not fixing this in SP1 is incredible. It would take probably 3 lines of code to fix this and almost anyone runs into this issue from time to time. Makes me wonder if someone still has an interest about this Windows thing at Microsoft.

A complete redesign of the various sound property windows is needed, there just all over the place. along with single click, right click, double click -> how about just one click to eveything i need..

This issue has been bugging me constantly since I've been using Vista :(

That might be fixed in a future version of Windows.

The double click behavior was removed intentionally, but the bolding wasn't removed when we removed the double click behavior.

The reason the double click behavior was removed was to make launching the master volume control faster (if you support double click, you need to wait for the double click interval (typically about 500ms) before starting the launch, this shaved 500ms off of the time to single click the master volume control.

Btw unsersky: You've misunderstood the point of SP1. SP1 wasn't about fixing UI annoyances, it was about fixing bugs that were hindering people's ability to use Vista.

This bug, while an annoyance doesn't hinder the use of the product.

How about a second click on the icon (ie. a click while the master volume is open) opens the entire mixer.

Also annoying is that the Mixer 'link' on the master control only responds to a mouse-down+mouse-up in exactly the same location. If you move by even a pixel between the down and up, it does not respond.

In Ubuntu one click opens master volume, while second click hides master volume and shows up the entire mixer.

So, no need to wait anything.

As a simple workaround, I just put a shortcut to sndvol.exe (system32) in my quicklaunch bar, still I would like to see the ability to change the default on click behaviour. And also to see the same closing behaviour applied to the mixer. (clicking outside the window to close it)

Hey guys, this has been fixed in Windows 7 6801. When I right click that menu item is no longer bolded.

litemininyuszika wrote on January 29, 2009, 9:23pm

No, it's not fixed, removing bold formatting on this text not solves the problem!
