Detailed informations about USB-devices

Submitted by Niclas on June 10, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

"USB-Controller" in the device manager does not give satisfyingly informations about connected USB-devices.

Make more clearly which USB-device is connected by displaying it's name (either brand or user given), it's cnnection type (USB1/USB2/USB3) etc. .

When viewing devices by type, your connected USB devices show up in their more appropriate classes. If there is no more appropriate class, the device/driver probably doesn't provide a more suitable name.

If you view devices by connection, you will see all of the information you are looking for.

agreed with zooba, having the usb controller type not display the controllers and hubs and instead display the connected device would be wrong.

The thing is guys, the information isn't really helpful. I have a keyboard and monitor that have got USB ports built into them. Now I know that logically they're just USB hubs on the USB chain, and that the keyboard (for instance) is just a device attached to that USB hub. But as far as I am concerned (and physically) it's a keyboard with USB ports. If there was some easy way to deliver that information it would really help clear things up.

I don't think this is possible to change due to the USB specification. The devices would need to supply more information (or implement as non-standard devices requiring special drivers).

You can switch Device Manager to View Devices By Connection to see a tree of how the devices are interconnected.
