Annoying resizing of windows that happens accidentally when dragging a window

Submitted by migueld on December 13, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

When dragging a window it's easy to accidentally resize it. The problem is that Vista made the resize border larger and the title bar smaller. In XP the resize border was much thinner and the title bar wider. It gets very annoying because one needs to aim very carefully at a titlebar to avoid accidental resizing. This applies to both, Vista classic and Vista Aero.

Make the resizing area thinner like in Windows XP, and the title bar slightly wider. OR, another solution: make only the 4 corners of a window resizable, instead of edges.

For those demoting, could you please justify why it wouldn't be beneficial to avoid accidental resizing for those of us who are running into this issue?

If you don't like the solution/s, can you suggest another one?

This is a big problem in Taskforce, people demote without any reason
well I don't like your latter solution, that would make it just like Mac OS X which is so user unfriendly

Thanks for the reply. Is people demoting because of the second solution? I provided 2 solutions for that exact purpose, if someone doesn't like one, consider the other. I think the first solution is very reasonable since it would behave like in Windows XP.

Secondly, the second solution is not just Mac OSX. In Mac OSX one can resize from only 1 corner. The proposal was being able to resize from all 4 corners. If you still don't like the solution, that's fair enough.

If someone is demoting this because of the second solution, please let me know. I'm considering removing it. I'm more interested in identifying the issue than settling on a solution.

I don't have a problem with resizing windows and I haven't noticed any difference with size of the resize area/border on the title bars.

I HATE this issue! The resize area in XP is MUCH smaller, I've never accidentally resized an XP window by clicking on the titlebar to move the window, but it happens ALL THE TIME in Vista. It's one of those things that starts out annoying at first, but then after it happens about half a dozen times a day, it makes me downright furious. I wish I could smack the people that give this a neg.

Is there any kind of registry hack to change the size of the resize area?

Ironically this request is getting demoted on Windows 7, I wonder if I worded my suggestion wrongly?
