Disk Cleanup - Internet Temporary Files

Submitted by Nivekv on November 3, 2008 to Bug, Usability

When you run Disk Cleanup and select Temporary Internet Files and then View Files, it brings you to a folder called content.IE5, or Internet Explorer 5. There is never anything in this folder probably because most users won't know how to open IE5. This is a problem because Temporary Internet Files are obviously never deleted.

Change the Disk Cleanup wizard to check the IE7 file instead of the IE5 file.

um. Hello? This is a problem with Windows Vista, and your calling me poor for doing what this site was made to do? I must be missing something.

This is a serious issue because Disk Cleanup is not doing it's job if it doesn't clean up the folders it says it will. In this case, it leaves all of the Internet Explorer "temp" files alone so it sits there and wastes hard drive space until you figure out where it's at and how to remove them.

Perhaps Joe was saying it was poor on Microsoft's part, not on yours.

Either way, the Content.IE5 folder actually serves a purpose nowadays, and it's not always empty either -- go into Folder Options and make sure you can see Hidden and System files.

That said, a few minutes ago I cleaned out my Temporary Internet Files, saw that Content.IE5 was more or less empty, browsed to a few pages, went back, and the folder actually contained bits of the webpages I had just visited. Plus Disk Cleanup listed a filesize greater than 0. Likewise, when you clean your Temporary Internet Files through IE itself, it'll clean the Content.IE5 folder too.

Here's the thing. I think IE is hard-coded to store there, *regardless of which version of IE you're using*. I'm using IE7 on a new Vista computer that has never touched IE5. But the folder's not empty; moreover, it's full of recent stuff. You decide.
