Character Map with shortcut keys / improved UX

Submitted by brian.shapiro on June 14, 2008 to Legacy, Usability

Windows Character Map has for a long time retained the same UX and functionality, while Office's Insert Symbol has expanded to include assigning shortcut keys (including default keystrokes for accented characters), opening the IME pad, and providing (more...)

Replace Character Map to match or exceed the UX and functionality in the Insert Symbol dialog found in Microsoft Office.

Refresh Toolbar

Submitted by brian.shapiro on June 8, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

You can make saved search folders toolbars like with regular folders, but there's a UI quirk:--- you have a bizarre design where the search refreshes when you click the expander, and only when you click the expander. The expander is only sometimes (more...)

The simplest solution is to add "Refresh Toolbar" to the context menu. There are other solutions too, including removing saved search toolbars altogether, or just removing the refresh of the search on clicking the expander. In any case, the (more...)

Drag-and-drop Breadcrumb Bar

Submitted by brian.shapiro on June 8, 2008 to Usability

You're unable to drag files to folders listed on the breadcrumb bar, and unable to drag folders off the breadcrumb bar. This limits the use of the breadcrumb bar in accessing folders in the same hierarchy, adding this feature would give great convenience (more...)

Allow full drag-and-drop capability on breadcrumb bar.

Address Drop-down

Submitted by brian.shapiro on June 8, 2008 to Annoyance, Legacy

When you open the address drop-down in Windows Explorer (or File Dialogs), most of items you'll see will be website URLs that were opened in Internet Explorer. This is a legacy feature from when Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer were integrated. (more...)

Make the address lists application specific; allow Windows Explorer to launch Internet Explorer and vice versa (to allow users the same flexibility), but limit the paths shown to those opened in that particular application.

Font Details

Submitted by brian.shapiro on June 3, 2008 to Legacy, Usability

File Properties for OTF or TTF files doesn't show relevant information under Details, such as Font Family Name and Font Subfamily Name. These are accessible through a www.microsoft.com/typography download, 'Font properties extension'. However, (more...)

At least add Font Family Name and Font Subfamily Name to the Details tab of Properties. Give the user the ability to add these columns when viewing the Fonts folder in Windows Explorer.

Advanced File Attributes

Submitted by brian.shapiro on June 3, 2008 to Icons, Legacy

Advanced Attributes in the Properties dialog for files still has a Windows 98-era icon.

The best way to deal with this is by revamping the entire UI by which file properties are displayed–hopefully learning from media management programs; but otherwise, the icon just needs to be updated.

Add Fonts

Submitted by brian.shapiro on June 3, 2008 to Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

Installing 100’s of fonts which each happen to have duplicate versions of Windows fonts - forces you to hit “Yes” over and over again.

Add “Yes to all” and “No to all” buttons; better yet, follow the conventions of the file copy dialog.
