Default Folder Size

Submitted by tsilb on July 10, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

Default windows open up as 800x600, regardless of their contents. I'm kind of an organizational freak with my filesystems; so I often have many open. They take up too much space.

When opening a folder that hasn't been opened before, or when not using "Remember each folder's view settings", size the window to display about 10% more space than the files actually consume within the window (Assuming there's (more...)

Let me Close the Explorer Bar

Submitted by tsilb on July 10, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

The entity formerly known as "Explorer bars" opens with any Explorer window and cannot be closed, except by making the window really skinny.

Task Manager Measurements

Submitted by tsilb on July 10, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Task manager update frequency and network utilization are uninformative and not particularly helpful. As a result, anyone wishing to know their network throughput must create a perfmon instance or install a third-party tool.

1. Measure Update Frequency in ms; or offer fractional frequencies (i.e. 1/2 sec; 1/4 sec; etc.).
2. Measure network throughput in an industry-standard format, like MBps.

Overlap Task Manager Graph Lines

Submitted by tsilb on July 10, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

Performance graph may become difficult to use with many cores.

Now that multi-core systems are mainstream and plentiful, there should be a third display option: Display one line per CPU in the same graph - Similar to the Performance Monitor of yore.

This will become a major issue in the coming years (more...)
