Help CEIP prompt is maximisable

Submitted by Michael Mc on September 25, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

The Help and Support Experience Improvement Program prompt is maximisable, but it maximises to a corner of the screen.

Disable maximisation for this dialogue to bring it into line with all other dialogues.

Windows Experience Index rating has file copy icon and misspelling

Submitted by Michael Mc on September 21, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons

When you're rating your system, the WEI rating window has a file copy icon in the titlebar. I know this dialogue is similar to a file copy one, but the icon seems a bit inappropriate, the arrow seems to suggest "copying" or "moving", (more...)

Consider changing the icon. Capitalise the M in Media.

Activation wizard font too large

Submitted by Michael Mc on September 21, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

Windows Activation Wizard font text is too big, should be a little smaller to match the rest of Vista.

Change the font size, won't take more than a few minutes.

Start Menu power options tooltip is too long

Submitted by Michael Mc on September 4, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug

When you hover over a power button in the start menu, the tooltip displays on one long line. Hover over a tooltip elsewhere and Windows automatically displays it on two or more lines. It's inconsistent.

Display the tooltip on multiple lines when it is too long, it only seems to be the power buttons affected by this weird issue.

Error or Warning? Driver recovery balloon.

Submitted by Michael Mc on July 2, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons

Sometimes, my laptop's display driver freaks out. The screen goes black for a few seconds and Windows pops up a little balloon in the corner to tell you that it's recovered everything. The problem? There's two conflicting icons.

Pick an icon. Is this an error, or a warning? Or neither? I think it needs an information icon since it's not warning me of anything or telling me something went wrong... it's telling me something went right.

"Shop for Music" in context menu

Submitted by Michael Mc on June 23, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Legacy

Right-click a folder full of music (or one customised as "music details") and you'll get the option to "Shop for music online", ported straight from Windows XP. You'll get a nice Luna blue webpage opening for you when you (more...)

I reckon this was just overlooked so take it out... if I want to buy music I'll use my Media Player. Or, at least update the website so it looks a bit more Vista-esque. :)

Windows Logon ("Welcome Screen") Inconsistencies

Submitted by Michael Mc on June 13, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug

With Vista, the "Windows is" was dropped from the logon screen. "Windows is logging off" became "Logging off" etc. Simple. But, some "Windows is" phrases still remain. When installing updates, Windows logs you off (more...)

This is like a major peeve of mine. Just edit out the "Windows is" part altogether. :)

Standardise on "Safe to Remove" confirmation

Submitted by Michael Mc on June 11, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

If you safely remove hardware via the icon in the notification area, you get a dialogue box. If you safely remove from anywhere else (like Computer) then you get a balloon.

Choose one confirmation method and stick with it. I think the balloon works better.

Programs and Features is laden with old stuff

Submitted by Michael Mc on June 11, 2008 to Aesthetics, Icons, Legacy

Well, perhaps "laden" is an exaggeration, but there's a few old icons in there.

Update them. It won't take two minutes. :)

Game Controller Properties

Submitted by Michael Mc on June 9, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons, Legacy

Features a Windows XP style logo, which is pretty weird since it doesn't seem to appear anywhere else in Vista. Also, the whole thing's just gross looking. I'm not sure whether this is just my controller specifically or what, but my controller (more...)

Update the icon. Overhaul the game controllers section.

Windows Installer has old icon

Submitted by Michael Mc on June 9, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons, Legacy

Windows Installer has an OLD Windows 2000/ME style icon. (I assume Windows Installer is a part of Windows itself?)

It's gotta go, get that icon gone. Replace it with something a little more Vista-like

Submitted by Michael Mc on June 8, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

So, you're in Control Panel and you want to change how you computer Indexes files. You click "Indexing Options". Why is there a need for the "Options" part on the end, we know it's options, we're in Control Panel. Same (more...)

Drop the "Settings", "Options" and "Properties".

Recycle Bin and Delete file dialogs need updating

Submitted by Michael Mc on June 4, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons

The Recycle Bin dialogs don't match other Vista dialogs. Vista dialogs have a white background, with a title message in blue and a grey bar at the bottom along with the buttons.

Update them. The bottom one is how (I think) it should look.
