Network Status Window

Submitted by QuiescentWonder on June 13, 2008 to Usability

It takes way to long for me to find my IP address. While I'm mostly happy with the new Network UI this is one thing I think could be simpler. In 2000 there was no way to do it, in XP it was nice and easy, in Vista it now takes longer. It's simpler (more...)

Make it easier to get to the Details window of network connections. If I'm only connected to one network I should be able to right-click on the network icon in the system tray and click Details to get right to it. If I'm connected to multiple (more...)

Quickly Access Fixed Width Font in Notepad

Submitted by QuiescentWonder on June 13, 2008 to Usability

It's a lot easier to read certain logs when you have a fixed-width font. It's much easier to read larger amounts of information when you have smaller, more compact fonts. It takes too much time to switch between fonts in notepad.

Include a feature in notepad to easily switch between fonts, or simply a "fixed width font" checkbox in the View menu which would turn on and off the use of Terminal or some other fixed width font.

Quick Launch Width Adjustment

Submitted by QuiescentWonder on June 13, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Every link on the Quick Launch menu is exactly the same size, so why is it that we can adjust it's width and have blank space in there? Having to move the slider back and repeatedly lock and unlock the Taskbar and adjust the width pixel-by-pixel (more...)

Make the width of the Quick Lauch adjustable but snap into place so that there is no empty unused space between the >> and the last icon.

Enable Drag and Drop to Taskbar

Submitted by QuiescentWonder on June 13, 2008 to Usability

If I have Notepad open and I want to copy and paste some text from a website into it, fine. I'm simply using this as an example. Depending on the context of the application I should be able to simply drop certain things onto items on the taskbar (more...)

For example, I should be able to highlight some text in an Internet Explorer window and drag and drop it onto Microsoft Word or Notepad directly on my taskbar. Simply include a default drop point in the applications bundled with Windows so that this is (more...)

Window Title Customization

Submitted by QuiescentWonder on June 12, 2008 to Usability

When enough windows are open the Taskbar is cluttered and some applications have impossible to read names. For example, as was pointed out in another submission, a lot of the applications included with Windows include the prefix "Windows". It's (more...)

Give programmers the ability to include a shortened version of their application name or window title which would fit into the item in the taskbar when it becomes filled. Explorer would display the full title until the amount of space is reduced to the (more...)

Start Menu Height

Submitted by QuiescentWonder on June 12, 2008 to Usability

The "All Programs" menu is limited to the height and width of the Start Menu, severely limiting the number of items you can see at once. This seems like a step in the wrong direction, since the very beginning of the Start Menu in Windows 95 (more...)

I'm not suggesting making the old Start Menu style the default, just a modified version of the new one which makes it easier and quicker for everyone to find the software they are looking for. I don't know how, but more space. While the new (more...)

Better Support for how Windows Handles Multiple Monitors

Submitted by QuiescentWonder on June 12, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

This is really multiple problems. For anyone who uses multiple monitors there is an assortment of smaller things which could be changed to make it much easier to work with.

I should be able to have all of my icons on any monitor without them snapping back to the first after I restart my computer. I should be able to have some icons on one monitor and some on another. This goes along with having the taskbar on multiple monitors, (more...)

Vector Based Graphics with Scaling

Submitted by QuiescentWonder on June 12, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Sure, I can change the font size and make everything look way out of wack... I'd rather just be able to scale everything to whatever size I want, instead of just the font. Where are the vector graphics that I read would be in Longhorn? I'd love (more...)

If you want to be cheap about it, make some lower widescreen resolutions available. If you want to make people happy, replace icons, images, etc. with vector graphics.
