Allow window resizing and moving be canceled by right-click

Submitted by Ensign Joe on December 17, 2008 to Usability

Often you happen to accidently drag or resize a window or you just wanna see what's behind...

Do it like in paint if you click right while still holding the left mouse button to drag or resize, cancel the operation and restore the window's original position and size.
(hm whoops... I actually wanted this to go to Windows 7 taskforce)

Little "invisible gap" between window buttons

Submitted by Ensign Joe on October 18, 2008 to Bug

If you use Aero Basic (not the 3D-acceleratet sh*t) and you hover the close button and move your mouse to the left slowly and pause between the close and maximize/restore button the close button will still be in hovered state and react on your click. (more...)

Close that gap between the Minimize and Maximize button

(Note: This does only apply to AERO BASIC!!!)

Window System Menu does not appear on every window button when right-clicking

Submitted by Ensign Joe on October 18, 2008 to Bug, Usability

If you left-click on the window's icon the system menu appears which gives you options to close, maximize, restore etc. the window.
The same menu appears wherever you *right*-click on the title bar of any window.
But:

Editing Media Library using keyboard shortcurts impossible

Submitted by Ensign Joe on September 11, 2008 to Annoyance

If you want to reorganize your Media Library you might think you can edit the entries like in Explorer using the F2 key. And indeed this works.
BUT:
Media Player only allows you to edit the Track number (which no one will ever edit) if you (more...)

Automatically select the track title when pressing F2 instead of the track number or - better - select the entry the user clicked on with the mous and then if he presses F2 edit it.

Set program access and computer defaults has no UAC icon

Submitted by Ensign Joe on September 9, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Icons

If you choose "Default programs" from your start menu and click on the "Set program access and computer defaults" link in the appearing Explorer window UAC suddenly pops up and interrupts you. There was no UAC icon.

Add a UAC shield to that icon or replace that green tick with the UAC icon

Aero Basic sucks

Submitted by Ensign Joe on September 1, 2008 to Aesthetics

All the Windows Live apps draw their window titles themselves and even under XP draw they all Aero style buttons in their title bar (Close, etc.)
But Vista itself uses this ugly Basic style.

Make the Aero Basic theme look like the default Aero theme.

Submitted by Ensign Joe on August 31, 2008 to Aesthetics, Icons, Legacy

As I use Vista in VPC only I have always mounted a network drive for sharing data with the host PC.
The network drives always use a legacy Windows 2000-era icon.

(And they're always disconnected but I think this is due to I'm (more...)

Start Menu does not load icons in advance

Submitted by Ensign Joe on August 31, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

If you open a Start Menu folder you didn't recently open Vista takes time to load all the icons of the entries. (See picture)

Make Vista load the icons of *all* Start Menu entries in advance and just check for changes if neccessary.

Start Menu does not fade in

Submitted by Ensign Joe on August 31, 2008 to Aesthetics

If you click on the start orb the Start Menu instantly appears, it does not fade in.
This issue was already present in Windows XP and the cause might be that the Start Menu is a complete window instead of a simple menu as the others are.
The (more...)

Make the Start Menu fade in when the user clicks on the Start Orb.
Also the Orb should fade in like the Play/Pause button in WMP or the Slideshow one in Photo Gallery

Merge reg file has no UAC elevation icon

Submitted by Ensign Joe on August 9, 2008 to Aesthetics

If you have a .reg file to merge into your registry you click on it and UAC prompts you for your permission.
Neither the file itself nor the menu entry "merge" do have a UAC elevation shield icon

Also the reg file icon (more...)

Place the UAC shield at least into the contextmenu next to the "Merge" entry.

Also replace the icon with a Vista like one

Zipped folders still do not act like normal folders

Submitted by Ensign Joe on July 5, 2008 to Usability

In Windows Me Microsoft introduced the ability to open Zip files like normal folders. And this feature was crap.
In Vista still those folders don't act like normal folders.

1. The context menu does not offer you to create a (more...)

1. Add the "New file" context menu entry to the contextmenu of the zipped folder
2. Let the user create and put empty files in the zip folder.

And please integrate the CAB-file extension in the same way as the zip one.

No instant search in Notepad/Wordpad

Submitted by Ensign Joe on July 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

There is no search bar in Notepad or Wordpad.
So always if you search for something in Notepad or Wordpad, you type Strg+F and this old-fashioned search dialog appears that even asks for a DIRECTION.
So, if you just entered some kind of (more...)

Logging on is very annoying if an error occurrs

Submitted by Ensign Joe on June 14, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

if you try to log on to Vista and have a typo in your password, Vista still "trys" to log you on and then says "Unable to logon" and forces you to press OK to go back to the log on screen.
The same issue if you are not allowed (more...)

Just do it like XP always did. Make a baloon pop up and not say "Logging on" or "Welcome" and shortly afterwars interrupt the user. Just do not start logging in and say "Password wrong" right away...
