snipping tool needs scroll functionality

Submitted by G-Z on August 12, 2008 to Usability

The snipping tool is too limited. Particularly on a small screen not everything that one wants to capture is displayed on the screen. Snipping tool doesn't allow to scroll down a window to select more content than the section that can be seen on (more...)

For small screens it would be helpful if it could make screenshots of window content that goes beyond the screen.

do not move gadgets out on the desktop but on to a dashboard-like seperate layer instead

Submitted by G-Z on August 12, 2008 to Usability

The sidebar is limited to a small area of the screen. Moving gadgets out of the sidebar to the desktop uses space that one probably wants to use for desktop icons.

Create a mode in which the sidebar can use the whole screen similar to dashboard so one can choose which gadgets he wants in his sidebar and which he wants in a full screen area. This area should be on a seperate layer so it wouldn't affect the desktop. (more...)

list context menu entries in the control panel (... and make it possible to edit them)

Submitted by G-Z on August 12, 2008 to Usability

Many programs make entries in the context menu. Also as far as the default entries of the context menu are concerned some of them are used frequently and some of them rarely. Not every user uses the context menu the same way though everyone is forced (more...)

list context menu entries in the control panel and make it possible to disable / enable them and to customize their order.

static previews of video files in explorer is often useless (Live Search Video is superior to Explorer)

Submitted by G-Z on August 12, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

static previews in explorer are useful for pictures but useless for video files. Often it just shows a minor significant section.

Vista should play a clip (when I move the mouse over it) instead of using a static frame.

Microsoft already uses a similar approach in his Live Search for Videos.

all (or at least more) files should have a thumbnail preview

Submitted by G-Z on August 12, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Some files in explorer have a thumbnail preview (PPP, PDFs, Images...) and some have not (Word files, Excel files ...).

all (or at least more) files should have a thumbnail preview. Increasing the size of the symbols would then give a real first impression of the files content.

do not integrate preview in explorer window

Submitted by G-Z on August 12, 2008 to Usability

The Preview functionality in explorer should not be integrated into the explorer window because it makes it hard to adjust its size reasonably, it often uses space though it is unused and it mostly does not show adequate previews.

Microsoft should use a similar approach than Apple did with their preview functionality in Leopard's Finder. I do not say that often but in my opinion for once Apple's approach is clearly superior.

unresponding software should no longer accept input

Submitted by G-Z on August 12, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

it often is the case that the user is able to click on programs that are obviously struggling with some problem. This interaction often leads to a worsening of the error and forces the software to crash.

if a program is struggling with a problem, interacting with it shouldn't be possible till the software starts responding correctly again.

in Mac OS X if a program stops responding a colored circle appears and no more input from the (more...)

navigating with files

Submitted by G-Z on August 12, 2008 to Usability

If I want to move one or more files from one location to another with drag and drop I can't navigate with the selected files through explorer. I have to open the source-location, open the end-location and then drag and drop the files directly.

Moving the mouse with dragged files over a folder should open it after a certain time.

a window can't be automatically (!!!) adjusted to its content, only manually

Submitted by G-Z on August 12, 2008 to Usability

In Windows the user has two choises how he wants to display a window: fullscreen or in a manually adjusted size.

But it is not possible to adjust the size to the windows' content.

The double arrows that appear when going to the edge of a window (the ones you have to use to do the adjustment manually) should by double clicking automatically adjust the size of the window (the width or length) to its content.

It would (more...)

vista needs too much ressources

Submitted by G-Z on August 12, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

I know that this submission is kind of well known, very general and a bit silly too, but still it is an important concern to me.

I experienced several times that a computer which with XP works fast, reliable and just perfect, after a Vista (more...)

indicate loading programs visually

Submitted by G-Z on August 11, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

I often click on a software and don't know if it is really loading. Or I accidentally click on a software and have to wait till it's fully loaded to close it.

The bar ond the taskbar that shows an opened window should appear imidiately so one can see that the programm is really starting and has the possibility to close it.

a problem in a specific area affects the whole system

Submitted by G-Z on August 11, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

It is often the case that if one software has a problem and doesn't respond another software refuses to function correctly too. Sometimes one specific software problem even affects the whole OS.

An example I experienced recently: I (more...)

There is no real difference between "open" and "explorer"

Submitted by G-Z on August 6, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Right clicking on a folder one gets the two options "open" and "explorer". It seems like the only difference is that with "explorer" the folder tree appears.

Or is there something I don't get?
