Non-contiguous selections do not behave as expected when items are grouped.

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 30, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

Windows Explorer allows you to select non-contiguous ranges as described in the image.

However, when the items are grouped instead of sorted, Ctrl+Shift+Click does not work as it should and breaks your selection (i.e. it deselects previous (more...)

Make the selection method consistent throughout the views.

Prevent accidental mouse-clicks when using 'Snap to default button' option.

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 24, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Please people. If you're not a regular user of this option, you will not understand what I am talking about and therefore should refrain from voting.

Mouse Properties > Pointer Options > Automatically move pointer to the default (more...)

There is no way a human user can react to a dialog in a split second. If the mouse clicks on a button almost as soon as the dialog appears, it can be taken for granted that the click was not intended.

Introduce a tiny delay (say 250ms) (more...)

Drive capacity indicators are not representative of their text description (or vice-versa)

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 23, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

The bar represents how much of the drive has been used, while the text states how much is free. This is remarkably counter-intuitive as a quick glance at the text would imply that that is being represented by the bar.

Look at the picture (more...)

Allow the user to choose whether he wants to display used space or free space and make the bar consistent with the text.

The Shortcut key field in the Properties dialog for Quick Launch items is broken.

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 23, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

Assigning a shortcut key in the Properties dialog to a Quick Launch item does not work.

Using the WinKey+<number> to access the Quick Launch items is a superior shortcut system and there's no reason to have this field in place.

Either:
- Make the shortcut keys work.
- Remove the Shortcut Key field from the Properties dialog for items in the Quick Launch toolbar

Provide pixel aspect ratio compensation for thumbnails and image viewer.

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 23, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Windows doesn't seem to gracefully handle non-square pixel aspect ratio images.

Thumbnails as well as Photo Gallery display a squashed/stretched version of the actual image.

Office 2007 handles these images perfectly (more...)

Display non-square pixel aspect ratio images correctly.

Allow a selection 'undo' (or 'redo' if you prefer)

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 21, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

This would be really useful, especially when using checkbox selection.

Checkbox selection is a beautiful way for the lazy user (me) to select multiple, non-contiguous files. Unfortunately, the checkboxes are quite small and accidentally (more...)

Allow the previous selection state to be recalled.

Implement backward word delete while renaming a file.

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 20, 2008 to Usability

While renaming a file, Ctrl+Delete works to forward delete a word. However for some curious reason Ctrl+Backspace has not been implemented to backward delete a word.

Use the standard Ctrl+Backspace shortcut to backward delete words while renaming files.

In the Favorites list, the tooltip shows for items that are already fully readable.

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 20, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

The tooltip behavior of the Favorites list is inconsistent with that of the Folders list.

In the Folders list, the tooltip shows only for items that are partially concealed.

This is how it should be for the Favorites list (more...)

Show a tooltip only for items that are too wide to fit the width of the list.

Search results should be pinnable

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 20, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Clicking on any search result closes the Start menu and forgets your previous search.

Sometimes, when you have very similar search results and you click on the wrong result, you have to reopen the Start menu and type your search again.

Allow the search results to be pinned open or provide some way to easily recall the last search.

In Details View, the right-click behavior is inconsistent.

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 20, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

This is the current behavior:

When you hover above an item in Details View, the entire line is highlighted, indicating the hit area.

If you directly right-click in white space, the item loses focus and the folder context-menu (more...)

Select the item and bring up its context-menu when directly right-clicking in white space in Details View.

Right-clicking an item in the Favorites makes the selection overlay disappear.

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 20, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

When you right click any favorite link in Explorer, the blue overlay disappears when the context menu appears. This behavior is not consistent with the rest of Explorer.

Keep the item that you right-clicked on highlighted even after the context menu appears.

On multiple monitors, pause the mouse on the common edge, especially if the 2nd display is to the left.

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 19, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

If you have a 2nd display to the left of the primary display, shooting the mouse to the bottom left corner to hit the Start Button will miss its target and make the cursor fly off to the next monitor.

Similarly, if you have a 2nd display (more...)

Break the cursor's motion (optionally) when it hits the common edge of a multiple display setup.

Allow on-the-fly reassigning of Sleep/Lock buttons

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 19, 2008 to Usability

I never use the Lock button on the Start Menu (prefer Win+L) and it would be useful to reassign it something I use more often.

Like the image suggests, implement a right-click menu to change the button to what you want.

Ctrl+clicking/Ctrl+Enter a search result should open its file location.

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 19, 2008 to Usability

The only way to open an Explorer window to the location of the search result is to right click on it and choose 'Open file location'.

Ctrl+clicking or pressing Ctrl+Enter should open the file location.

Enter press defaults to 'Search Everywhere' even with exact string match.

Submitted by eikonoklastes2 on November 19, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

When searching for files not in the Start Menu, the default Enter key action is 'Search Everywhere', even when the top result is an exact match.

Make pressing Enter default to the top search result.
