Use Boot Manager font in Chkdsk and other BootExecute applications

Submitted by Phil_123 on January 12, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

On some localized versions of Windows (since Windows 2000 I think), an additional font is loaded to help display the localized version of the boot manager. But when an app is ran during BootExecute (such as chkdsk when you shut down Windows improperly (more...)

Find some way to let that BootExecute mode keep on using Boot Manager's font, or any other way to make it capable of displaying Unicode characters.

Change System Locale: Thou shalt restart now... what?

Submitted by Phil_123 on January 4, 2009 to Annoyance

When I change the system locale (Language for non-Unicode programs), this comes out... Restart now, or Cancel. Can I restart later? I don't know. Do I press Cancel? But this means it will cancel the system locale change, right? I'm confused.

Replace the Cancel button with a Postpone button.

Boot Manager: Which is my Vista?

Submitted by Phil_123 on November 18, 2008 to Annoyance

Previous versions of Windows not only put the product name but also their version (like "Home", "Professional", "Standard", "Datacenter", "Enterprise") and the target platform if it is not x86. (like "x64 (more...)

Be descriptive with boot menu descriptions.

I noticed that if you screwed up something and repaired the Boot Manager with the Vista setup disc, the boot items are described as it should, with text for version and target platform. Why didn't (more...)

Command prompt: Where is UAC?

Submitted by Phil_123 on November 8, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

When I use a command that require administrator privileges, why does it run only to return an access denied error, forcing me to run the same command again in a separate Command Prompt with administrator privileges?

Make commands that require administrator privileges ask for it through UAC, just like everything else in everywhere else. Or implement a *nix su command equivalent that elevates the Command Prompt session.

What are the items in "Do this for all current items (xx found)"?

Submitted by Phil_123 on October 30, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

What are the "all current items" when this dialog comes up during a file moving operation? Why must these items pause the rest of the file moving progress until I answer the dialog?

When moving files, move everything that doesn't need user attention, then show a dialog with a list of every item that needs user confirmation of what to do with them.
