Restart warning has old buttons

Skinning the rundll32.exe file with MyToolkit works perfectly but I agree it should be skinned already. How do Microsoft expect novice users to do this?

Editing Media Library using keyboard shortcurts impossible

Wrote on September 15, 2008, 9:34am

It just selects the track number first because it's the first column. It would be strange if it started half-way through. I sometimes edit the track number but I know what you mean; it's not the most often used column.

You can learn to create your own, of course.

Windows Media Player 11 hasn't a button to open a file.

Most people use the Library to play their media files.

classify installed applications in control panel

Quite a good idea. It would be good for novice users for all the programs to be arranged by category. Another good addition would be to give the user the ability to cateogorise the programs manually too.

Speech Recognition Microphone Setup Wizard doesn't have a "Back" button

Wrote on September 5, 2008, 12:14pm

I think their rationale for moving the back button up into the top-left corner was that it makes it consistent with Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer and that it is rarely used. Does stink a bit to me of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' but... what do I know? :)

Should we report IE8 beta quirks?

Wrote on September 5, 2008, 12:30am

.Chris, you're right: tino asked 'if' we should post the problems. Michael Mc brought up the 'where' bit but I tried to answer both anyway.

"if you want to do it directly to microsoft then we should take all the posts on here and give them to microsoft and shut down this site..."

I'm not saying we should report everything to Microsoft directly. Just problems with IE8 as they are still working on it. We can't guarantee that the guys who make IE8 will look at this web site. We may as well be as constructive as possible while we still have the chance by telling Microsoft about problems in an ongoing development but it's still important for us to express our dislikes of Windows here too.

Should we report IE8 beta quirks?

Wrote on September 4, 2008, 3:28pm

@.Chris

Sorry, that's not the same question. Read it again. As I wasn't sure what tino was asking I answered two possible questions: the first whether we should post IE8 quirks 'here' or, second, 'at all'. I think we should but just not here. Do it directly to Microsoft.

How seriously should we take it then, .Chris? If talking about the topic in discussion is 'taking it too seriously' then we may as well not bother at all. :)

Remember the stack by tags option in Explorer

Wrote on September 4, 2008, 10:17am

I think this is because it's not technically a "folder view", I think that when you stack the contents of a folder, Windows Explorer takes you to a virtual folder with the files shown in stacks. A bit like 'Search Results' in Windows XP wasn't a folder view, it was a virtual folder.

I promoted this one though as, if this is the case, it would be a good idea to make it possible to persist the stack view.

Should we report IE8 beta quirks?

@tino

If you were asking if we should report IE8 quirks here, then I'd say the answer is 'no'. I think there is a facility in IE8 beta to report bugs and suggestions (I don't have it to hand at the moment so I can't check). I'd use that instead.

If the question is 'should' we report IE8 quirks, then I've already answered that; the answer's definitely 'yes'.

Make the space bar play/pause the movie in windows media player

Wrote on September 3, 2008, 5:25pm

+1 I like the controls in PowerDVD. Space is Play/Pause, +/- are Volume Up and Volume Down, Page Up/Page Down are Back 5 seconds/Forward 5 seconds. Something similar in Windows Media Player would be great.

Start Menu in Windows Vista has a lot of graphic artifacts

Wrote on September 3, 2008, 5:12pm

Yes, I've seen the one where a menu item looks like it's being hovered over when it isn't. The only way to get rid of that is to change back to the classic Start Menu then back to the Panel or restart the computer.

Task Manager's "End Process" menu item is in the wrong spot on the context menu

Wrote on September 3, 2008, 2:47pm

+1 I think 'End Process', like 'Open' for files, is the most-used option in the context menu, therfore it should be at the top. I only ever launch Task Manager to kill a naughty process and I've only used the 'Open File Location' option once.

Allow to select multiple programs to uninstall and use QuietUninstallString and Windows Installer in quiet mode, and launch them one by one automatically

Ah, I see. My apologies. I have changed my vote as I think that would be a nice usability improvement.

Start Menu does not fade in

Wrote on September 3, 2008, 2:33pm

A fading Start Panel would not cause problems unless you had a very slow PC indeed, in which case you shouldn't/couldn't run Vista anyway. Even though the Start Panel is a seperate window unlike a menu they could still use the AnimateWindow API, for example, to make it fade. So it can be done.
