Integrate the search box also in the Services Control Pane

Wrote on December 23, 2008, 5:04am

Agreed. Please add. In fact, all admin applets and control panel windows like this one need search boxes (only if there is a list).

~1995 Screen Flicker

Wrote on November 21, 2008, 4:32am

Agreed! Apple does it. When Windows takes over during boot there shouldn't be anymore flicker. Here is an idea do a quick, not very noticable fade-in and fade-out instead of flickers. They don't have to be seen, just enough fade that it doesn't flicker.

Also I must note there, what the heck is up with UAC? It flashes at the bottom of the task bar then when I click on it, it darkens the screen and shows the dialog. Kind of pointless isn't it? Also UAC should do a noticeable small fade (not big like the fade in to the Orb glow on boot up).

Copy/Move Files

Wrote on November 16, 2008, 1:36am

I was just able to post this suggestion. Then I saw this was already posted. I do have a suggestion to add or a better solution.

What I was thinking is file operations should check if there are any files needing to be replaced or moved and warn the user ahead of time before the operation starts and lets the user pick the actions before they go watch TV or make dinner. That way when the operation is done it's done. Also if there was a ton of files that needed a confirm replace dialog those would be delt with before operations begin and would save the user a great deal of time in the end.

Volume Notification Icon Double Click

Hey guys, this has been fixed in Windows 7 6801. When I right click that menu item is no longer bolded.

recycle bin

Wrote on November 16, 2008, 1:03am

Actually, you aren't seeing the big picture with the recycle bin process. When you delete something it's thrown into the Recycle Bin. When the Recycle Bin is emptied all of those files are flagged as free space. The actual 1s and 0s are never wiped. As you create more files and fill up your hard drive new files overwrite old data that has been marked as free. That's why when you use a file recovery program like Recuva you can recover files that were in the recycle bin by accident when you emptied it.

Application Continuity - Pick one!

Wrote on September 20, 2008, 8:17pm

Great news guys! Microsoft has finally listened!! They have a consistant layout in store in Windows 7. Build in applications like Paint, Wordpad use the Office 2007 Blue Style ribion and Calculator, Windows Media Player, Windows Explorer, Notepad, IE8 and toolbars all use the same style same color light blue bars.

They look awesome! Big hand and shout out to Microsoft! They are doing a wonderful job with Windows 7! I wish I could blog about this but my blog hosting is down :(.

Anyways see the UI of Windows 7 here: http://www.thinknext.net/archives/2268

Screen update is frozen when progress dialog is minimized

Wrote on July 23, 2008, 9:56pm

Agreed and +1.
Yes! Why do we have these live previews if they are not really live? It defeats the whole purpose. The purpose is so that you don't have to maximize the window to see what's going on or to see what the window looked like you could just hover over. But they don't do any good if they are not live.

Window Control tooltips

Wrote on July 23, 2008, 9:52pm

I'd say get rid of the tooltips. Windows has been around for how long? I think people would know how to minimize a window. And if they don't, I would be teaching them because those are the kinds of users who need a good neighbor or son-in-law or whatever to teach them how to use a computer.

But back to the point, I say just get rid of these tooltips on the minimize, maximize, and close buttons, they're useless.

"Look & Feel" of Control Panel items is all over the place

Wrote on July 23, 2008, 9:50pm

I think it should be the aurora on the left with the links and stuff to other control panel places and then like a Office 2007 bar at the top or something for toolbar options, and this should be a unique look that is only for control panel. Maybe even a black bar at the top, I don't know but all control panel applets and control panel windows should use this look with the aurora on the left and the bar on the top!!

Move WinSAT tests during Windows install to a point prior to the user setting up their account

Wrote on July 23, 2008, 9:39pm

Oh totally! Because when I first installed Vista I was like "yes! it's done" oh wait... nope I had to wait, I'm pretty sure their goal was to no make the user wait with attention (e.g. like in xp in the middle of installation it asks for information), WinSAT right after account creation is very annoying. I expected it to be done not do more.

'Desktop' in file picker dialog cannot be moved

Wrote on July 23, 2008, 9:29pm

Sorry wrong thread.

'Desktop' in file picker dialog cannot be moved

Wrote on July 23, 2008, 9:29pm

Aren't we going to the powershell anyways?

But I agree, I will +1 in case they decide to keep the old command prompt.

Copy/Move Files

Wrote on July 23, 2008, 9:24pm

Definitely agreed, because even though there are "yes to all" or "skip to all" buttons if the prompt comes up on the 10th file of 200 files that's no good. I agree it should automatically skip the files and then at the end of the copy/move it should show the prompt or question like "The operation completed successfully, however, [such and such file] cannot be read. Skip, Try again, Cancel".

Some folders, when opened show icons inside but no file names

Wrote on July 23, 2008, 9:13pm

Regarding the shift key, I don't hold down the shift key when opening folders in fact my hands are off the keyboard. But I do see where you are coming from it also happens when you hold down the shift key but I've seen it without any keys being held down.
