Icon Confusion

Submitted by ryanlm on June 12, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug

Vista seems to randomly get Icons mixed up for some reason, see the photo as an example Windows Update apparently is a video. I see this happening there, and in the taskbar (primarily on folders in the taskbar)

Fix it!

Changing Glass Color does not change Blue Outline

Submitted by ryanlm on June 5, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug

When you change the color of glass to something else besides the default - everything changes accordingly except the outer border of a window. I almost forgot about this one, I just stopped changing the color, it looked terrible.

Color the line based on the selected color. Did I really need to type this :)

Remember Desktop Icon Placement

Submitted by ryanlm on June 4, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

With remote desktoping being more and more popular, it is very annoying that when I log into my machine and the resolution is smaller and then eventually log back in normally and all of my icons are messed.

There are probably 10 programs out there that fix this, one of them is ultramon, just buy them or do it yourself!

Search UI

Submitted by ryanlm on June 4, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Still amazingly hard to find and read the results from the OS Search. The UI is so terrible, I never find myself going beyond the basic Start Menu search. Its even hard to get to the advanced search, if you can call it that.

Do not make explorer do everything, or at least do it better. View the screenshot below from the competitor that was out of the gate years earlier. So much cleaner, easy to use, and you can stack several filters together easily.

Remote Desktop Drag and Drop

Submitted by ryanlm on June 4, 2008 to Usability

To transfer a file from a remote session locally, I have to either cut and paste (which works about 1 out of 5 times) or open windows explorer on the remote box, hope it linked up my local drive, and copy the file there.

Figure out drag and drop, even virtualization products have figured out this elusive UI plus.

Media Center Notifications

Submitted by ryanlm on June 4, 2008 to Annoyance

This one is an annoyance. Every so often the Media Center orb appears in the system try with a popup that says something like "Media Center is connecting to the internet to download TV Guide information".

WHO CARES...

Annoy us less.

Any Network Related UI

Submitted by ryanlm on June 4, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

Ok, this has to be one of the biggest areas that completely missed the mark in Vista. Managing your network.

To connect to a Wireless network on Vista the first time is somewhere between 5 and 10,000 clicks. I kid, but it is to much.

"Start -> connect to" should not bring up a silly dialog, it should be a menu of all your available connections, including available wireless connections. Do not make me jump through a wizard just to get connected.

Application Continuity - Pick one!

Submitted by ryanlm on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons, Legacy, Usability

Just look at the photo. My first reaction is - "Man, I hate when I get a brand new computer and it comes preloaded with all this random bloatware". Then you realize it actually is part of Vista and a little bit of your geek soul dies.

All kidding aside - the best thing to do here is really start over. Do not try to fix a trainwreck - you will spend more time on it than you think and your result wont be as nice. I do not know how MS develops, I would hope the UI is very disconnected (more...)

~1995 Screen Flicker

Submitted by ryanlm on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

This is an overall problem on Vista - you will see this when you do the following:

Boot - I understand that MS does not control the hardware, and I will accept one flicker as it windows takes over after post, HOWEVER - there is about 3 (more...)

Boot - After post, windows should read what resolution & color depth was last used, and boot with that, DO NOT SHOW anything until you are prepared to it is much better to wait than to have the screen popping on you. Apple has done this, so can you!
