Windows Installer has old icon

Submitted by Michael Mc on June 9, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons, Legacy

Windows Installer has an OLD Windows 2000/ME style icon. (I assume Windows Installer is a part of Windows itself?)

It's gotta go, get that icon gone. Replace it with something a little more Vista-like

Task Manager tab background

Submitted by Good_Bytes on June 4, 2008 to Aesthetics, Legacy

The task manager has the wrong color of the background tab. It should be white.
Even Windows XP is guilty of the same thing.

Change background of tab to match Vista UI (so white)

Tab order in File Open/Save dialogs broken

Submitted by wasker on June 3, 2008 to Bug, Usability

When Aero-style File Open/Save dialog is in Details mode, Shift-Tab moves focus from initial File Name text box to the list header, not to the list, which doesn't make sense and makes user press Shift-Tab over and over again.

PS.

Fix the tab order, so Shift-Tab would focus the list, not the header.

Standardise on "Safe to Remove" confirmation

Submitted by Michael Mc on June 11, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

If you safely remove hardware via the icon in the notification area, you get a dialogue box. If you safely remove from anywhere else (like Computer) then you get a balloon.

Choose one confirmation method and stick with it. I think the balloon works better.

Open up the window, I hate scrolling

Submitted by Jerryimho on June 6, 2008 to Annoyance

Most windows open up set to accommodate 640x480 resolution. I haven't used that resolution since 1992. My present monitor is 24" and this vast amount of screen real estate can accommodate and open any window wide enough and high enough to (more...)

Microsoft ought to get serious about Window aesthetics, and then return overall control of such matters to the user. If little utilities like Sizer can remember and set window proportions, I would think that in the million lines of code behind Vista (more...)

Old icons in advanced display settings

Submitted by Niclas on June 10, 2008 to Aesthetics, Icons

The advanced display settings (Desktop/Settings/Settings/Advanced/Monitor) show a really outdated icon for the monitor and the graphics adapter from the 95/98 era and should be modernized since the dialogue itself is "dusty" enough.

Modernize the icons.

Submitted by gointern on June 20, 2008 to Usability

Is there enough information on copy file window?

Add file name? Maybe a pause button? Could move operation skip files if there is a problem with them.

Submitted by Niclas on June 10, 2008 to Aesthetics, Icons

The standby- and USV-dialogues in the energy options show obsolete or mixed icons.

Replace the icons by modern ones.

Tool tips hiding quick start icons

Submitted by tino on June 3, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

The tooltips for the quick start area in the taskbar are in front of the other icons and hiding them.

Should be above the taskbar (like the tool tips for all other taskbar elements).

Any Network Related UI

Submitted by ryanlm on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

Ok, this has to be one of the biggest areas that completely missed the mark in Vista. Managing your network.

To connect to a Wireless network on Vista the first time is somewhere between 5 and 10,000 clicks. I kid, but it is to much.

"Start -> connect to" should not bring up a silly dialog, it should be a menu of all your available connections, including available wireless connections. Do not make me jump through a wizard just to get connected.

.WMF File Icon is Ancient

Submitted by RyGuy12 on June 13, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons, Legacy

The icon for a .wmf file is horribly outdated.

Fix it. Adding the basic picture icon or even a preview would be an improvement.

The icon for MHTML files does not exist in Vista icon format; and the largest size is 32×32.

Update icon sizes.

UAC overlay icons aren't correctly blended.

Submitted by mrmckeb on June 4, 2008 to Aesthetics, Icons

The icons are surrounded by a white jagged edge, instead of being blended neatly. It is more apparent when the icons are larger.
Note: I don't normally have my icons that large, it's just for demonstration purposes.

Blend the icons correctly.
