Old mouse pointers everywhere in Vista

Submitted by eried on June 7, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons

Specially when you drag items to some programs, try dragging a textfile over notepad: Nice shadowed new Vista pointer vanishes and appear a legacy 3.11 Windows mouse pointer

Update resources or make it non "hardcoded"

Paint MUST be replaced

Submitted by wasker on June 4, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

Stock Paint application is outdated, feature-limited, ugly and must be thrown away from the modern operating system environment.

Replace Paint with more sophisticated application. Paint.NET looks very promising.

Regedit does not show active registry folder

Submitted by eried on June 7, 2008 to Icons, Usability

When searching in Regedit, in Windows XP you can see a different icon for "opened" folder in the lateral registry tree. In Vista is nearly impossible to know what registry contents you're viewing (it's possible only looking at status (more...)

Use another icon for "opened" registry folder

Update the management console icons

Submitted by Niclas on June 10, 2008 to Aesthetics, Icons

The management console still looks like NT 4.0 times.
Old, pixelized folders and outdated, flat icons.

Replace the old icons by modern ones.

Changing Glass Color does not change Blue Outline

Submitted by ryanlm on June 5, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug

When you change the color of glass to something else besides the default - everything changes accordingly except the outer border of a window. I almost forgot about this one, I just stopped changing the color, it looked terrible.

Color the line based on the selected color. Did I really need to type this :)

You can't close menus in the command bar

Submitted by tino on June 3, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

It is not possible to close menus like "Organize" in Windows Explorer or "File" in Windows Photo Gallery by clicking on them a second time. This is really annoying because to close them, you deselect your files by clicking on another (more...)

A second click should close a menu (as it does before).

Search UI

Submitted by ryanlm on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Still amazingly hard to find and read the results from the OS Search. The UI is so terrible, I never find myself going beyond the basic Start Menu search. Its even hard to get to the advanced search, if you can call it that.

Do not make explorer do everything, or at least do it better. View the screenshot below from the competitor that was out of the gate years earlier. So much cleaner, easy to use, and you can stack several filters together easily.

~1995 Screen Flicker

Submitted by ryanlm on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

This is an overall problem on Vista - you will see this when you do the following:

Boot - I understand that MS does not control the hardware, and I will accept one flicker as it windows takes over after post, HOWEVER - there is about 3 (more...)

Boot - After post, windows should read what resolution & color depth was last used, and boot with that, DO NOT SHOW anything until you are prepared to it is much better to wait than to have the screen popping on you. Apple has done this, so can you!

Notepad: Allow infinite Undo/Redo.

Submitted by thda on June 8, 2008 to Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

In notepad, you can undo/redo only the most recent change.
In something as simple as a text editor, there is NO excuse for not allowing the user to undo/redo an infinite number of changes.

Implement infinite undo/redo.

Submitted by zot on June 11, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

The standard File-open dialog states "This folder is empty" when there are no files matching the filetype filter. Even when the folder isn't empty.

Change the filter to one that matches some files and magically the folder (more...)

Please don't lie. Only say "This folder is empty" when the folder is empty.

When there are hidden items, say "This folder contains no files of the chosen type".

Allow users the ability to add the option to view FOLDER sizes in Explorer

Submitted by WordsWithin on June 4, 2008 to Annoyance

In any Windows version, the OS does not allow you the option of view folder sizes in the Explorer windows. I don't know how many times I've seen this mentioned on forums and help sites: people want this option!

Regardless of whether this takes up resources or not, allow the user to choose to view this: it's their resources to allocate as they wish!
