Volume Notification Icon Double Click

Submitted by StormChaser on June 3, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

When you right click the volume icon, "Open Volume Mixer" is bolded, indicating it as the default action for double click. When double clicked though, it acts the same as a single click.

When volume icon is double clicked, Volume Mixer should be opened.

Inconsistent font in common file dialogs.

Submitted by SvenGroot on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Bug

The common file dialogs use legacy fonts (MS Sans Serif) in the bottom panel, while the top panel uses Segoe UI.

This is especially noticable on Japanese systems (and possibly other Asian languages as well), where the top part uses the (more...)

Use Segoe UI for the entire dialog.

File Copy and/or Move operations should have a "CONTINUE" funciton on error, as well as a "PAUSE" button

Submitted by rgonzruiz on June 9, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

1) If you are copying or moving many files and an error occurs, you must start all over again...

2) Also, when you are copying or moving many files, you can't pause it to do something else that needs intensive disk operation... you (more...)

1) How about a simple "Continue" or "Skip" button that allows for the operation to continue on the rest of the files instead of simply stopping?

2) A "Pause/Continue" button would allow for an operation to (more...)

Applications stealing focus

Submitted by Turbo on June 5, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

I'm doing something. Another application decides I shouldn't, so it bumps to the front and grabs keyboard focus, to ask me something irrelevant to what I was doing (Usually an installer or some other long-running process asking me something (more...)

The complete cure is two-fold.
The easy part: continue redesigning your applications that steal focus. Lead with the example.
The hard part: deprecate (and later remove) the mechanism that allows such behavior. If an application wants your (more...)

Choose Columns Dialog

Submitted by Kris on June 6, 2008 to Usability

The Windows Explorer choose column dialog is non resizeable and overloaded. According to Winspector there are 267 to choose from, this may vary depending on the programs installed.

1. The window should be resizeable.
2. Optionally the window could have a more drastic overhaul where the columns are categorized, detailed and searchable.

Resizing of Network and Sharing Center Window Causes Icons to shrink, out of proportion.

Submitted by cheungroys on June 8, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Icons

When resizing the window of Network and Sharing Center, the icons that represent connectivity resizes, out of proportion.

Fix It. Make images resize proportionally, not just stretch it.

Provide a new Set of high quality icons and a better UI for selecting / previewing them

Submitted by OneFingerSnap on June 12, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons, Legacy

Outdated and impractical dialog for changing shortcut and program icons. Mixing old low quality icons with new high quality ones.

When pressing the 'Change Icon' for a shortcut or program, please provide a reasonably sized and resizable window, containing a large set of only high quality icons. Please, do not mix outdated looking icons with new ones. These should be presented (more...)

Continuity - Back buttons!

Submitted by lawrencejob on June 11, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Bah. Almost all back buttons in Vista are different.

IE + Explorer
Defender
Help and support
SP1 installer
First-boot installation wizard
Move your files from old PC, wizard

The back buttons (more...)

1. Tidy up the buttons, make them move consistent. Stop the things moving, changing colors, shining, etc. It's hideous rolling over an icon in the Help + Support center, for example.

2. Ribbon? Something new? This has been a piece (more...)

IE: Download dialog needs redesign/bugfix

Submitted by thda on June 7, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Legacy, Usability

- This is a file copy operation, so this dialog should look like the file copy dialogs. The "Security Warning" dialog should be integrated into the download dialog.
- No support for pause/resume or error recovery.

- Redesign the dialog to look like the file copy dialogs.
This dialog should first show the "security warning", and then change to show the download status.
- Handle timeout errors intelligently (show a Try Again button).

IE Autoscroll cursor

Submitted by hornetfig on June 13, 2008 to Aesthetics

Click your scroll wheel button in Internet Explorer. You get the rather horrid autoscroll cursor pictured. Other applications from Firefox to Microsoft Office applications supply better autoscroll cursors.

Appropriate the icon used in MS Office.

Show total size of stuff in the recycle bin

Submitted by bandycj on June 8, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Windows 98 used to show the total size of stuff in the recycle bin on the status bar. XP took it down to just counting the size of the files but not folders. Vista has done away with it completely unless you ctrl+a.

Show a summary *somewhere* on the recycle bin window of the total size of the recycle bin.
