MMC's "Customize View" dialog doesn't respond to "X" or ESC

Submitted by fowl on September 8, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

The close button (red "X" in top right) on this dialog doesn't do anything, neither does pressing escape.

There is no easy way to cancel the changes you have made using this dialog. Or to kill it.

Make escape and the close button work. Maybe add a cancel button.

Hopefully this will be replaced completely in the hopefull MMC overhaul. :D

Start Menu power options tooltip is too long

Submitted by Michael Mc on September 4, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug

When you hover over a power button in the start menu, the tooltip displays on one long line. Hover over a tooltip elsewhere and Windows automatically displays it on two or more lines. It's inconsistent.

Display the tooltip on multiple lines when it is too long, it only seems to be the power buttons affected by this weird issue.

Windows Installer: add API to automatically search for updates and install them (notify but don't install by default for security reasons)

Submitted by antiufo on September 3, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Windows Installer is a good package system, but it doesn't support application updates.

Add new APIs to Windows Installer, and integrate them with Windows Update (as a separate category). The applications should not check for new versions on startup via UI, but this should be automatically done (and the user should be able to choose for (more...)

Launching an Office 2007 program by double clicking file opens 2 windows

Submitted by heldorado on September 2, 2008 to Annoyance

When you open up any kind of Office 2007 file, let's say an Excel file, by double clicking the file's icon, it will launch the file as well as an empty Excel window. This only happens when Excel is not running before you double click the file.

Remember the stack by tags option in Explorer

Submitted by mikeaspatrick on September 1, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

Vista will remember, usually anyway, the sort and group by options you set for a folder. If you tell it to stack by tags though, which I now use a lot, it won't ever remember this folder view.

Allow customisation of the Lock button on the Start menu

Submitted by mikeaspatrick on September 1, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

I've changed my Sleep button to Shut down and want to change my lock button to something more useful like Restart.

I've been using Vista since it was in an early beta and I've never pushed this button once!

On Shutdown, programs that require user prompt difficult to get to.

Submitted by DakkonA on September 1, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

The "These programs are still running:" screen on shutdown is nice, but unfortunately it appears too quickly and can cause problems. This screen is usually encountered when a program has a file open and prompts the user if they want to save (more...)

Windows should at the least have a "wait" option on the "These programs are still running" screen to give the user a chance to take action while allowing the shutdown process to resume. Ideally, Windows could detect that a program (more...)

Unknown WMC Search

Submitted by clindhartsen on September 1, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

To the better part of my knowledge, Windows Media Center makes no mention, but contains a baseline search function within the Music and Photos/Videos sections. If you begin to type a few letters, it will appear on the screen in large font and find what (more...)

Start Menu does not load icons in advance

Submitted by Ensign Joe on August 31, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

If you open a Start Menu folder you didn't recently open Vista takes time to load all the icons of the entries. (See picture)

Make Vista load the icons of *all* Start Menu entries in advance and just check for changes if neccessary.

Internet Explorer: middle-clicking a tab should blank the page, IF it is the ONLY tab.

Submitted by antiufo on August 29, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

The minimum number of open tabs in IE is one. For example, if you have three tabs, you can close two of them with a middle click, but if you middle-click the last one nothing happens.
I know, you can always close the browser or type a new URL that (more...)

When a user middle-clicks (or tries to close) the only left tab, it should be blanked (about:blank).
