Safely Remove Hardware dialog is programmer-oriented, not user-oriented

Submitted by npiaseck on June 3, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Overly complex, hostile dialog is painful when your computer comes with one of those 6-in-1 card readers (as does mine), an external hard drive, and a USB thumb drive. Unchecking “display device components” leaves unhelpful, undistinguishable entries. (more...)

Add the drive letters, add the device names, and get rid of all the worthless tree-level stuff; it’s a programmer’s view, not a user’s view.

In 2008, we no longer need to be calling these things a "USB Mass Storage Device."

Allow ordering of Taskbar

Submitted by Cheesus on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

When explorer dies, the taskbar returns with apps in a different order than they were originally.

1. Remember the order (save them maybe every minute?) and restore if explorer is restarted.

2. Allow the user to re-order them.

It seems silly that we should have to install extra software to do the reordering.

Add Fonts

Submitted by brian.shapiro on June 3, 2008 to Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

Installing 100’s of fonts which each happen to have duplicate versions of Windows fonts - forces you to hit “Yes” over and over again.

Add “Yes to all” and “No to all” buttons; better yet, follow the conventions of the file copy dialog.

Apperance Settings

Submitted by pfifer on June 5, 2008 to Annoyance

Windows Aero windows preview does not show Windows Aero Theme. Only shows Windows Vista Basic Theme. This might confuse some people as to which theme is which.

Put a new preview image in.

ACCORDING TO A COMMENT, THIS HAS BEEN FIXED IN WINDOWS 7

Volume Notification Icon Double Click

Submitted by StormChaser on June 3, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

When you right click the volume icon, "Open Volume Mixer" is bolded, indicating it as the default action for double click. When double clicked though, it acts the same as a single click.

When volume icon is double clicked, Volume Mixer should be opened.

Paint MUST be replaced

Submitted by wasker on June 4, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

Stock Paint application is outdated, feature-limited, ugly and must be thrown away from the modern operating system environment.

Replace Paint with more sophisticated application. Paint.NET looks very promising.

Standardise on "Safe to Remove" confirmation

Submitted by Michael Mc on June 11, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

If you safely remove hardware via the icon in the notification area, you get a dialogue box. If you safely remove from anywhere else (like Computer) then you get a balloon.

Choose one confirmation method and stick with it. I think the balloon works better.

Tool tips hiding quick start icons

Submitted by tino on June 3, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

The tooltips for the quick start area in the taskbar are in front of the other icons and hiding them.

Should be above the taskbar (like the tool tips for all other taskbar elements).

Wrong Documents Icon in Send To menu

Submitted by chrismgallen on June 17, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons

When you right click an object in Windows Explorer, and select the "send to" option, the Documents Icon is different to EVERY OTHER time that is used.

REALLY annoys me that microsoft could leave something so stupid like this in.

Change icon.

"Shop for Music" in context menu

Submitted by Michael Mc on June 23, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Legacy

Right-click a folder full of music (or one customised as "music details") and you'll get the option to "Shop for music online", ported straight from Windows XP. You'll get a nice Luna blue webpage opening for you when you (more...)

I reckon this was just overlooked so take it out... if I want to buy music I'll use my Media Player. Or, at least update the website so it looks a bit more Vista-esque. :)

On-Screen Keyboard have old-style icons

Submitted by miniLiLO:) on August 3, 2008 to Annoyance, Icons, Legacy

On-Screen Keyboard have old-style start menu icon in XP. Plus in Vista the already legacy icon replaced with an XP-style icon. Not good step, Microsoft. I think Vista must have Vista-style icons and not XP-style or whatever (e.g. Windows 3.1 :P)

Need to replace the XP-style icon for On-Screen Keyboard and replace the legacy start menu icon in the "keyboard" part of On-Screen Keyboard.
