Add an option for editing the context menu (right click)

Submitted by XtremeSound on June 8, 2008 to Aesthetics, Usability

Nowadays, each application we install puts it's own "uniqe touch" on various menus: the desktop menu, IE menu, misc media files menu, etc... The problem is that not every applications lets you disable these items!

Add a simple method for editing those menu items (disable, remove or even move them). It can be placed in the "personalization" panel.

Tab order in File Open/Save dialogs broken

Submitted by wasker on June 3, 2008 to Bug, Usability

When Aero-style File Open/Save dialog is in Details mode, Shift-Tab moves focus from initial File Name text box to the list header, not to the list, which doesn't make sense and makes user press Shift-Tab over and over again.

PS.

Fix the tab order, so Shift-Tab would focus the list, not the header.

Tool tips hiding quick start icons

Submitted by tino on June 3, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

The tooltips for the quick start area in the taskbar are in front of the other icons and hiding them.

Should be above the taskbar (like the tool tips for all other taskbar elements).

Any Network Related UI

Submitted by ryanlm on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

Ok, this has to be one of the biggest areas that completely missed the mark in Vista. Managing your network.

To connect to a Wireless network on Vista the first time is somewhere between 5 and 10,000 clicks. I kid, but it is to much.

"Start -> connect to" should not bring up a silly dialog, it should be a menu of all your available connections, including available wireless connections. Do not make me jump through a wizard just to get connected.

Default programs association for protocol/filetype

Submitted by michal on June 6, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

...bad
...hundreds of lines
Only two "bookmarks" - protocols and extensions.

Add search, more "bookmarks" (Images, Music, Video ...) and do it more user friendly.

Vista goes into standby when shutting down / Option to not resume from hiberation

Submitted by rm20010 on June 4, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

This can be very annoying for laptops...

Set Vista to go in standby when you close your laptop's lid. Then when you try to shutdown your laptop and immediately proceed to close the lid, Vista proceeds to go into standby even though (more...)

Insert some code to stop Vista from going into standby when shutting down.

Copying files: When I say ALL I mean ALL

Submitted by zot on June 11, 2008 to Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

When you copy a number of files, and they are overwriting destination files, Windows asks you if you want to overwrite the destination files. There is a "Yes to all" option. You click it but for the next file of a different type it asks you (more...)

All should mean ALL.

Change the All button to have a drop-down arrow on it so that you can choose from a menu that has "All files of this type" and "All files" options.

Windows Key + H to Hide The Currently Visible Application

Submitted by purefusion on June 10, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Windows + D shows the desktop.
Windows + M minimizes all apps.

But there's no option to minimize or hide the current app. There should be something that simply gets your app out of your way quickly without much thought.

Windows + H to hide/minimize the current app.

Unlike Mac's standard Cmd + H, using the windows key keeps the OS-function from interfering with program-specific shortcuts.

Also, might be nice to have an optional setting (more...)

Taskbar over some tooltips and menus (yet!)

Submitted by eried on June 7, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

The taskbar sometimes overlaps menus and tooltips, in XP happens a lot. In Vista they appear to put some "monitoring" code to fix this situation but occasionally you will experience it again

Desktop Icons Behind Sidebar

Submitted by Max Schmeling on June 13, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

If you have any icons close to the sidebar, and you lower your screen resolution, or if you have icons on the right side of the side of the screen that you have the sidebar set to, and you turn it on, the icons get covered by the sidebar. You can still (more...)

There may be some functionality to be added around this. Maybe not though, as I can see forcefully moving those icons as possibly a bad thing. It could just "push" the icons over out of its way though.

Windows Photo Gallery: auto-rotate by EXIF data

Submitted by ion on June 16, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Windows Photo Gallery and Media Center does not support automatically rotating photos by their EXIF information. I have a cheap photo camera like millions of other users and it adds EXIF orientation tag to the files.

It's annoying (more...)

Please add support for EXIF orientation/rotation data in Windows or at least in the graphic applications.

One Tab in Display-settings dialogs

Submitted by pool on June 9, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

You don't have any choice between Tabs in any of those Dialogs. So why displaying it as a Tab?

Remove the Tab-Layer at the Top of those Windows.
