Permissions editor is way too complicated and outdated

Submitted by wasker on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Legacy, Usability

User has to make millions of clicks to edit permissions for the file. All dialogs which pop up in the process don't make the process any clearer.

Keep it simple, reduce number of intermediate dialogs and clicks.

Application Continuity - Pick one!

Submitted by ryanlm on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons, Legacy, Usability

Just look at the photo. My first reaction is - "Man, I hate when I get a brand new computer and it comes preloaded with all this random bloatware". Then you realize it actually is part of Vista and a little bit of your geek soul dies.

All kidding aside - the best thing to do here is really start over. Do not try to fix a trainwreck - you will spend more time on it than you think and your result wont be as nice. I do not know how MS develops, I would hope the UI is very disconnected (more...)

"Add Fonts" is outdated

Submitted by longzheng on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Legacy, Usability

Generally outdated. Uses Windows 3.1-era folder views. Cannot select individual font file - lists all fonts in folder.

Not only update styling, but add new functionality. Search. Font management - activate/deactivate. Fonts export/backup functionality.

According to a credible source, the dialog no longer exists in Windows 7 and is most likely not going to come back. No words whether or not there are any new 'font organization' features.

Performance options dialog has available space for list, doesn't use it, isn't resizable

Submitted by murdocdv on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Usability

Performance Options has a semi-long list of items, but the box the options are in does not use all the space in the dialog to minimize scrolling, and the dialog as a whole isn't resizable

Make the dialog resizable. Make the box containing the items use all the available space in the dialog. If the dialog is made resizable, make sure the box the options are in properly uses all space.

Allow ordering of Taskbar

Submitted by Cheesus on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

When explorer dies, the taskbar returns with apps in a different order than they were originally.

1. Remember the order (save them maybe every minute?) and restore if explorer is restarted.

2. Allow the user to re-order them.

It seems silly that we should have to install extra software to do the reordering.

Customize/Folder view: Apply to all - how to make it working?

Submitted by damiankrol on June 5, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Usability

That's one of the most annoying thing in (probably all versions of) Windows - how on Earth could I set ONE template (e.g. sort by, list view) to ALL folders? None of existing options work - even if you set it manually, it changes spontaneously in (more...)

Please try to provide one dialog for every folders which will allow user to set the behavior of how folders are/should be displayed. And forget it then. Thanks.

"Look & Feel" of Control Panel items is all over the place

Submitted by JeremyG on June 8, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

For some reason, someone decided that it was "OK" to allow every Control Panel item have an entirely different User Interface.

- Some are standard Dialogs.
- Some are "explorer" windows with a left-side "task (more...)

Change Control Panel configurations to use a common UI.

Suggestions:
- Simple tree-view like MMC
- Office 2007 style ie "Word Options" (just add icons)
- Even an Outlook style interface could work

Volume Mixer gone mad

Submitted by GRiNSER on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

The background of the volume mixer sometimes is black.
MS knows of that problem but didn't fix it until now.
Such UI glitches must be avoided, that's embarassing!

Recycle Bin and Delete file dialogs need updating

Submitted by Michael Mc on June 4, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons

The Recycle Bin dialogs don't match other Vista dialogs. Vista dialogs have a white background, with a title message in blue and a grey bar at the bottom along with the buttons.

Update them. The bottom one is how (I think) it should look.

Legacy control panel applets

Submitted by Turbo on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Legacy, Usability

Many of the control panels options are XP-style applets (called "property sheets", ie: Windows Firewall Settings, Sound Settings), living side-by-side with the new integrated pages, which provide a familiar navigation pattern and help guide (more...)

Redesign the legacy property sheets in the control panel as task flow pages.

Menu Bars

Submitted by Turbo on June 4, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Every single application, framework, etc has it's own way of drawing menu bars. Some have animations (ie: File Explorer), some don't (Internet Explorer). Some do mouse tracking painting the background blue (both Explorers), most apply a bevel (more...)

Set a single design in stone, and use it everywhere.

Yeah, it's a huge task. You buried yourself there.
