Application Continuity - Pick one!

Submitted by ryanlm on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons, Legacy, Usability

Just look at the photo. My first reaction is - "Man, I hate when I get a brand new computer and it comes preloaded with all this random bloatware". Then you realize it actually is part of Vista and a little bit of your geek soul dies.

All kidding aside - the best thing to do here is really start over. Do not try to fix a trainwreck - you will spend more time on it than you think and your result wont be as nice. I do not know how MS develops, I would hope the UI is very disconnected (more...)

"Look & Feel" of Control Panel items is all over the place

Submitted by JeremyG on June 8, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

For some reason, someone decided that it was "OK" to allow every Control Panel item have an entirely different User Interface.

- Some are standard Dialogs.
- Some are "explorer" windows with a left-side "task (more...)

Change Control Panel configurations to use a common UI.

Suggestions:
- Simple tree-view like MMC
- Office 2007 style ie "Word Options" (just add icons)
- Even an Outlook style interface could work

Legacy control panel applets

Submitted by Turbo on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Legacy, Usability

Many of the control panels options are XP-style applets (called "property sheets", ie: Windows Firewall Settings, Sound Settings), living side-by-side with the new integrated pages, which provide a familiar navigation pattern and help guide (more...)

Redesign the legacy property sheets in the control panel as task flow pages.

Applications stealing focus

Submitted by Turbo on June 5, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

I'm doing something. Another application decides I shouldn't, so it bumps to the front and grabs keyboard focus, to ask me something irrelevant to what I was doing (Usually an installer or some other long-running process asking me something (more...)

The complete cure is two-fold.
The easy part: continue redesigning your applications that steal focus. Lead with the example.
The hard part: deprecate (and later remove) the mechanism that allows such behavior. If an application wants your (more...)

~1995 Screen Flicker

Submitted by ryanlm on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

This is an overall problem on Vista - you will see this when you do the following:

Boot - I understand that MS does not control the hardware, and I will accept one flicker as it windows takes over after post, HOWEVER - there is about 3 (more...)

Boot - After post, windows should read what resolution & color depth was last used, and boot with that, DO NOT SHOW anything until you are prepared to it is much better to wait than to have the screen popping on you. Apple has done this, so can you!

Submitted by thda on June 4, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

Open up the window, I hate scrolling

Submitted by Jerryimho on June 6, 2008 to Annoyance

Most windows open up set to accommodate 640x480 resolution. I haven't used that resolution since 1992. My present monitor is 24" and this vast amount of screen real estate can accommodate and open any window wide enough and high enough to (more...)

Microsoft ought to get serious about Window aesthetics, and then return overall control of such matters to the user. If little utilities like Sizer can remember and set window proportions, I would think that in the million lines of code behind Vista (more...)

Any Network Related UI

Submitted by ryanlm on June 4, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Legacy, Usability

Ok, this has to be one of the biggest areas that completely missed the mark in Vista. Managing your network.

To connect to a Wireless network on Vista the first time is somewhere between 5 and 10,000 clicks. I kid, but it is to much.

"Start -> connect to" should not bring up a silly dialog, it should be a menu of all your available connections, including available wireless connections. Do not make me jump through a wizard just to get connected.

Network (more...)

Vector Based Graphics with Scaling

Submitted by QuiescentWonder on June 12, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Sure, I can change the font size and make everything look way out of wack... I'd rather just be able to scale everything to whatever size I want, instead of just the font. Where are the vector graphics that I read would be in Longhorn? I'd love (more...)

If you want to be cheap about it, make some lower widescreen resolutions available. If you want to make people happy, replace icons, images, etc. with vector graphics.

Inconsistent theme colours

Submitted by JamesB on June 20, 2008 to Aesthetics, Bug

Theme colours are inconsistently applied in ListBox and ComboBox's. Changing the default colour of selected items in Windows (i.e. text selection/listbox selections) does not get applied to listboxes or comboboxes - it seems that these controls use (more...)
