Start Menu size limitations

Submitted by applejax on June 12, 2008 to Annoyance

When customizing the Start Menu, the menu will hit a limit of how "short" it will get. This leaves a lot of wasted space.

Allow the Start Menu to size itself appropriately based on options selected.

Vista Explorer is Sluggish

Submitted by westmassguy on June 12, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance

Explorer is way too slow. I work with many small video files, all types from avi, wmv, mpg, rm etc. Mousing over many different files in Vista is painful. Explorer is trying to do so much in the background, figuring out what type of file it is, that it (more...)

Fix it. Make it simple and fast.

Pasting Files Using Ctrl+V in Windows Explorer Doesn't Work the First Time

Submitted by purefusion on June 11, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug

In Windows Explorer (and the file dialogs inside applications), when files are copied or cut, then pasted somewhere else using the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+V), the shortcut keys must be pressed a second time (after a short pause) because the command does (more...)

Ctrl+V should work the first time around. :)

Order of [user] and Computer

Submitted by fumbles on June 10, 2008 to Annoyance

Win9x has My Computer above My Documents, with XP this was switched. You could download TweakUI to reverse this back to the 9x days, but not in Vista!

Option to switch them back!

Rename 'Programs and Features' to 'Add/Remove Programs'

Submitted by mdodds on June 8, 2008 to Annoyance

For whatever reason Microsoft decided to change the name one of the most commonly used Control Panel icons from 'Add/Remove Programs' to 'Programs and Features'. Not only does this change the name of an icon that's been the same (more...)

It's probably too late to change the icon name in VIsta, but change it back in Windows 7, and don't change any more icon names unless there is a direct and substansial benefit to the user.

Allow assignment of explorer actions

Submitted by Cheesus on June 3, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

It really annoys me that if I'm browsing pictures (and not going through Photo Gallery) that I have to take my hands off the keyboard to click "Slide Show".

There should be a way to assign keystrokes to these explorer actions. They can be disabled by default but there should be a way to enable and possibly change them on an individual basis.

For example, I'd always way "Slide Show" (more...)

Include POSIX-style command line tools as an installation option

Submitted by joec2000 on January 19, 2009 to Usability

It would be great if I didn't have to install Cygwin to get POSIX-style command line utilities like ls, sftp, ssh, grep, etc. How many of you guys that jump from platform to platform have typed ls at a DOS prompt?

I know they weren't written by MS, but come on, can't we all just get along? They're free, they're simple and some of them have been around for decades. At the very least make them an installation option.

ALT+TAB Program Listing Favors the Desktop

Submitted by me@justinho.com on June 27, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Currently, ALT+TABbing between Desktop and other apps is inconsistent. Desktop always shows up as LAST application on the first row. This is unexpected, since the "last" program usually shows up as the 2nd in the list, UNLESS Desktop was the (more...)

The 2nd application (ie. two tabs away) should ALWAYS be the last program selection, whether or not it's the desktop. Inconsistent behaviour is annoying.

Popularity based on the percentage of promotes

Submitted by icecone on June 12, 2008 to Website suggestion

A suggestion with 200 promotes and 50 demotes does not actually mean it's popular, and one with 30 promotes and no demotes should be more popular, but probability its just less read.

Add a way to sort the submissions based on the percentage of promotes.
Of course, in order to avoid having those with 1 votes being counted as 100%, filter out those with less than 10 (or 20) votes when sorted this way.

Annoyance in Vista's Windows Explorer navigation

Submitted by talkersoft on June 12, 2008 to Annoyance

Windows XP had the ability to move up a folder using the up arrow on the toolbar of the explorer window. This was great for navigating to a folder located above your current working folder. In windows Vista they decided to do away with the up arrow. The (more...)

This would easily be remedied by adding an option to right click context on the address bar to open the folder in new window. Or better yet put the up arrow back on the navigation bar next to organize, views and burn

Executable Files Need a separate Overlay Icon - It's About Time!

Submitted by thenonhacker on June 7, 2008 to Annoyance, Icons, Usability

Viruses get spread by creating infected executable files that look like Vista Folders, and can get annoying because of another UAC prompt.

Add a special Overlay Icon for:

- EXE files
- COM files
- BAT / Batch files
- SCR / Screen Saver files
- Shell Scraps
- Java JAR Files
- VBScript Files
- JavaScript Files

AND:

Weird UAC Prompt Placements

Submitted by FrozenTrout on June 3, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

UAC prompt doesn’t always appear in the same place. It could show up in the middle, on the right, or even on the left. If this is on purpose, then there should be an option to for the user to set a default position.

Allow the UAC prompt to appear always in a single position; that is also friendly to multiple monitor setups.
