Narrator is running but not shown in taskbar

Submitted by jc4life05 on April 8, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Icons, Usability

As you can see from the picture below, I have Narrator running, usually it starts automatically when I start the computer or return from sleep mode. However, the narrator program is not visible on the taskbar.

This happens in Vista Business (more...)

A simple solution would be to add a troubleshooting feature that is in the action center to remedy this situation. In less words, fix the bug and show narrator when it should be shown.

The explorer folder icon displayed for websites developed using Microsoft tools is outdated. Websites created using Visual Studio, Expression, Sharepoint Designer, and other tools get assigned this old icon.

Dots in a folder name cause Vista to think it's an extension

Submitted by Djo on January 6, 2009 to Bug, Icons

When you create a folder that contains a dot in its name, Windows Vista apparently thinks it has something to do with file extensions.
There is also a generic icon next to the "Open" button instead of a folder icon if you look at the (more...)

Recycle Bin icon disappears

Submitted by I'am a pc on December 13, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Icons

When recycling certain files, the recycle bin icon disappears from the desktop. The icon title remains and a blank area is left displaying the background behind.

To recover the recycle bin icon, you need to go to personalize and select desktop icons from the left control pane and remove the recycle bin then push OK. After removing the icon, go back and add the icon to the desktop again then push OK. Microsoft (more...)

Sloppy alignment of label text on AutoPlay menus

Submitted by jvd897 on November 14, 2008 to Aesthetics, Icons

The AutoPlay menu's header includes the label of the object/drive, beside its icon (even if it's just a generic system icon like for a blank CD). However, the label text is aligned to the top of the icon space, which looks sort of clunky.

My suggestion is that the middle of the text be aligned to the middle of the icon, which looks more polished and intentional. See my mock-up for an example.

I can't imagine that fixing this would be difficult at all. I mean, even (more...)

IMAP folders download uses legacy icons

Submitted by GoddersUK on November 2, 2008 to Aesthetics, Icons, Legacy

If you reset your IMAP folders list the download dialogue uses legacy icons.

(This screenshot was taken in Live Mail, but I assume that it is the same in Windows Mail)

Update the icons.

If you right click taskbar and go on properties. Click the Start Menu tab. Go on classic start menu customize option and you will see two very old icons dating back to windows 95 and XP.

Does direct x even have a logo anymore - if not give the app a windows flag logo? or at least use the slightly newer direct x logo - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/01/Directx9.png

Add a control panel for governing default window size and icon view mode.

Submitted by Red Herring on October 27, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons, Usability

In Vista a windows size has a default one which I understand that Microsoft must have as a standard size but this size is too small on high resolution or widescreen displays.

On top of that particularly Windows Vista fails to adhere to (more...)

For Vista or Windows 7 create a control panel which has three default window size options with a keyboard shortcut attached to each so if need be via a shortcut the view mode can be quickly changed back to the standard one & will affect any open windows (more...)

USB/Flash drives do not have "percentage used" color overlay

Submitted by rubber gun on October 21, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons, Legacy, Usability

My USB is FAT32, and is shown in Computer. If i right click, and click view as portable device, it comes up in an anoying window, which DOES show an overlay. First, the "portable device" concept is useless, and second, why does it show the overlay?

Centralize portable devices into Computer, and let USB drives have remaining space overlay
